Building Skills & Confidence: Growing as a New Grad
Starting a career in Occupational Therapy as a new graduate is an exciting journey. It can be challenging to find a company that supports, inspires, and prepares you. But when Marissa came into Blue Stone Therapy, she saw support from day one. Marissa McMicheal is an Occupational Therapist at Blue Stone Therapy, and started her journey at St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa.
Since joining the company, she has been able to bring her passion for patient care to residents across Eastern Iowa. Marissa currently works in many of our partner facilities like Accura Healthcare of Accura Healthcare of Muscatine, Simpson Memorial Home in West Liberty, Wilton Retirement Community, and Pleasantview Home.
Within the skilled nursing field, each day looks very different for Marissa. Through Blue Stone Therapy she gets to travel between different facilities each week and works directly with patients to help them build strength and regain independence. As an Occupational Therapist, she brings in functional activities that help patients move more and achieve their personal goals. She works closely with the rest of her therapy teams and nursing staff each day, to help make their patients stronger and healthier.

“As a new grad, I’ve really appreciated having people around me who are always willing to answer questions, share their experience, and encourage me as I continue to learn and grow!”, Marissa shares. The transition from school to working in the field takes practice, but Marissa has been prepared by our organization and has achieved many goals already. Working hands-on with patients has helped her build her clinical confidence and focus on individualized care. This has helped her improve her teamwork and communication skills.
She is grateful for the experience and support that are helping her grow as an occupational therapist. “I value the mentorship and guidance available, especially as a new grad. Knowing I have support when I need it makes me feel more confident and comfortable in my role.” Marissa shares. Our company excels in supporting our team members, and creating a positive atmosphere for our employees to work in.
One of Marissa’s favorite parts about working at Blue Stone Therapy is the welcoming, team-oriented culture. As a new graduate, having friendly coworkers who are always ready to answer questions, share advice, and offer encouragement makes a huge difference in her daily work. Blue Stone Therapy also provides great tools and mentorship to help team members stay organized and supported. The clear rehab directions keep her daily schedule on track, while available guidance gives her the reassurance, she needs to feel comfortable and confident in her role every day.
