Blue Stone Therapy Moves Company Headquarters in Urbandale
In May 2020, Doug and Theresa Johnson walked into their second office location, a 3,000 sq. ft. space that had just been leased with big plans to grow. The building was completely empty—bare floors, blank walls—waiting for Doug and Theresa’s vision to take shape. There was a lot of work to do, but Doug was ready to roll up his sleeves and get started, knowing this was the moment to take things in a bold new direction.
At the core of their vision was a desire to transform how his team worked together. Doug, CEO of Blue Stone Therapy, wanted a space that would offer collaboration, one that was open, flexible, and conducive to teamwork. The office wasn’t just any workspace; it was also an outpatient therapy clinic—a patient-driven environment designed to make communication and efficiency a priority while delivering the highest quality care. The challenge wasn’t just about creating room for people to work; it was about designing an atmosphere that sparked productivity, connection, and seamless service.
As the clinic began to take shape and more people joined the team, it became clear that they would need more space—and fast. In just the first year, the growth was undeniable. The business was thriving, and the team was expanding. To keep up with demand and continue providing exceptional service, they would need an additional office just around the corner in a separate building. But this time, it wasn’t just about more office space, half of the new building would be dedicated to warehouse space, which made a huge difference for organization and storage.
While the additional space provided much-needed room for everyone, it also introduced some new challenges. With Blue Stone Therapy’s headquarters now split between two buildings, communication became trickier. There was confusion about where meetings would be held, and the physical separation created some barriers to seamless collaboration.
The office atmosphere needed to be dynamic and ready for the future—one that could grow, evolve, and adapt as the team did. As the company expanded, it quickly became clear that an entirely new building was the solution. With a growing therapist staff of 950+, and 150+ communities, there was a growing need for Blue Stone Therapy’s HQ to be all under a single roof again. The old layout, with offices throughout two buildings, made communication challenging at times and collaboration less frequent. The new space just down the road addressed all the needs as the company grows.

“We’ve added bright colors, including blue to promote calm and creativity, and plenty of natural light to keep everyone energized,” Doug shared. The design was intentionally open and seamless for the whole team. There are wide meeting spaces surrounded by offices, providing a layout that encourages quick, fluid communication between the growing team of regional vice presidents, directors of clinical services, and support staff.
But this new space wasn’t just about work. It was about maintaining the company culture, where face-to-face interaction could still happen. “We really needed to get everyone back together,” Doug said. “Once the teams were split up, we noticed immediately how much we wanted them back together. Being together under one roof brought more speed, clarity, and unity. We’re a team, not a corporate entity, and I wanted the office to reflect that. It’s not just an office—it’s a home for our people.”
“This is a great move," said Theresa, COO of Blue Stone Therapy. "Having everyone in the same location will allow for more spontaneous interactions, which will undoubtedly lead to better ideas and solutions for our providers and partners."
The new office isn’t just about having more room—it’s about creating a welcoming environment from the moment you step in. There will be a comfortable lobby with cozy seating and the heart and Brand of Blue Stone Therapy will be prominent with the new colors and the visitor information on display. Plus, we’ve added plenty of parking, which is something we really struggled with at the old office.
"Blue Stone Therapy is strategically expanding, both in size and leadership, and this new office space will help us collaborate more efficiently and provide clearer direction for our regional teams. The unification of our offices marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for Blue Stone Therapy.” said Doug Johnson, CEO of Blue Stone Therapy, “We chose this location for its convenience—just 1.8 miles from our previous office—and its strategic value for the business. This move feels like the right step forward for us, and I couldn't be more excited for what lies ahead. It’s going to benefit everyone within the company and our partners, and I’m truly eager to continue enhancing lives along the way."
